Summer Budget Travel Ideas

Expedia.com

Article by Jason A. Martin

The summer is here and the travel bug is biting in full force. If you’re like many people, you want to travel, but your budget is, well, somewhat lacking. Never fear, you can still travel this summer. There are deals all over the place. Here are some ideas to help you transform your travel dream into a vacation reality.

Go Last Minute

Yep, you can save some serious money by waiting to the last minute to go. Most people plan ahead–and this is a good plan. However, if you’re caught in the middle, it might be best to go last minute.

There are some great Web sites out there that feature last minute airfare deals and some of those deals are spectacular.

Use Airline Miles–Barter for More

If you’ve got airline miles, use them. Don’t have enough airline miles to go anywhere fun? Try bartering for more. The Internet is full of wondrous Web sites and some of them allow you to barter for additional airline miles.

This tactic is really good if you’re just short of reaching your goal. I’d definitely recommend you take a gander at doing this.

It’s Train Time

When was the last time you were on a train? If you want to get out and see the country, literally, then going on a rail excursion might be just what the doctor ordered. Did you know that you can buy an unlimited train pass for North America?

It’s called the North America Rail Pass–nifty title–and it’s offered by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. When you buy a pass, which runs $ 999 during the peak season, you get 30 consecutive days of rail fun. It’s unlimited. Go where you want, when you want.

There are over 28,000 miles and 900 destinations that this pass opens up to you. And there’s even a nice $ 100 discount for seniors, students and children.

Get Going

There’s no excuse not to travel this summer–unless you can’t get away from work. If you have budget concerns, think outside the box. Happy travels.

Vacation tips for those on a budget

Expedia.com

Article by Tony Robinson

Just about every vacationer is interesting in keeping the cost of his or her adventures low. Most people work all year just to be able to enjoy a one or two week vacation from the cares of the world. Unless you are independently wealthy and money is no object, chances are you will be interested in the following tips for squeezing the most value out of your limited vacation dollars.

 When planning for a particular destination, especially a popular one like Orlando, Europe or the Caribbean, it pays to plan ahead. Be sure to spend some time researching the local attractions, and comparing various lodging options. Be sure to look for discounts that are available, and see if it is possible to buy things like theme park tickets or museum admissions prior to arrival. Doing so can save you both time and money.

 Try taking your holiday in the off season or shoulder season. Avoiding the high season can provide many benefits, including lower prices and fewer crowds. Prices on airline tickets, car rentals, hates and cruises often drop significantly after the high season has gone.

 If you have friends or relatives near your chosen destination, consider asking them for a place to say. It can be fun for many people to show visitors around their town, and they may enjoy having the company. When taking this approach, however, be sure to chip in by doing chores, paying for groceries, filling the gas tank on the family car, etc.

 Try to plan flying vacations for the times of year when airfares are generally the cheapest. For most destinations, this period runs from February through May and September through December. The one exception to this rule is the week before Thanksgiving and the two weeks leading up to Christmas, when prices shoot back up. If you must fly during the high season, be sure to research the fares on low cost airlines.

 When traveling by car, be sure to pack lots of ready to eat food in the car to avoid expensive restaurant meals.

 When eating in restaurants, try to avoid those that obviously cater to the tourist crowd. Eating where the locals do will allow you to enjoy better food at lower prices.

 When planning your hotel stays, try to strike a balance between a convenient location and a low price. Hotels closer to a given attraction are generally more expensive, while those in suburbs and outlying areas tend to be less costly.

 Compare the amenities of the hotels carefully. Decide what is important to you, and use those priorities as a guide when choosing from among comparably priced hotels.

 For a low cost alternative to expensive hotels, consider renting an RV for your next vacation. There are a number of rental agencies that offer rentals, and an RV can often be a low cost alternative. RV campgrounds are generally much less expensive than traditional hotel rooms.

 When renting a car, choose the smallest, most fuel efficient vehicle you can find. Not only are compact and subcompact cars cheaper to rent, but they are cheaper to operate as well.

 If traveling in your own car, be sure it is up for the trip. A good pre vacation checkup or tune-up can save a lot of problems. Car repairs on the road can be both inconvenient and expensive.

 If the destination you are traveling to has good public transportation options, you may not need your own car, or a rental car, at all. Many large cities in the United States and Europe have such good bus, subway and train systems that a personal car is unnecessary.

 Camping can be an excellent, and very low cost vacation for nature lovers of all ages and interests. Campgrounds are easy to find and inexpensive. In addition, many campgrounds offer great amenities, such as swimming pools, sports and every movie nights.

 Planning activities that do not need a lot of money to enjoy, such as hiking and swimming, is a good way to maximize value and minimize vacation spending. In addition, museums and historical sites generally have very low priced admissions and can be fun for the entire family.

Comprehensive Budget Travel Tips

Expedia.com

Article by globecheap

There are endless little budget travel tips that can save you a little money here and there. None of them will save you tons of money, but all those little bits can add up to an affordable trip.

If you’re visiting a big city, hotels tend to be expensive the closer in you stay to the city center. Even the budget hotels might strain your budget. Consider staying in a suburb or the next small town over. Take a 15-20 minute bus or train ride into the city. Hotels and restaurants will be cheaper, and it may even be a cuter area to stay in.

Home swaps are becoming more popular as a way to save while on holiday. They’re good for families or small groups traveling together to share the expense.

As an even more frugal alternative to a hotel, if you’re young and adventurous, you might even want to give “couch surfing” a try. It’s a system where you register, then are referred to strangers who are willing to let you sleep on their couch. Sign up to host or be a couch surfer with an organization like Couch Surfing. They will connect you with others who are interested in letting you flop on their sofa. You can also sign up to host travelers yourself.

There are house swaps and couches to flop on all over the world. You have to be willing to give up a little of your privacy, but you can save a lot of money…. and make new friends while you’re saving – Budget travel can be a lot of fun!!!

Consider booking a fly/drive bundle or hotels bundled with flights. You might be an independent traveler who likes to find your own accommodations, but you might find you can save a bundle with those budget travel tips.

If you want to go to a play or the opera look for half-off, same day sales booths. Many cities have these. In London and New York where everyone wants to see a play, these booths can save you a bunch. The only downside is you might not be able to see the latest plays. You may have to stand in a long line, and you might have to pay cash.

Are there any budget travel tips when you’re renting a car? Get the smallest car that you and your group can fit in. Car companies love to say they can “upgrade” you for only a little more…. but why do you want to pay more if you don’t need the space. Bigger cars take more gas… gas is expensive. (And, the driver in our team reminds me, they’re harder to park.)

Don’t get the “gas package” where you can return the rental car empty… you’ll never get it to empty…. You’ll be too afraid of running out of gas on your way back to the airport, so you’ll lose money on that half tank that’s left. Just fill it up near the airport and save money.

Think about your budget… and the environment when you leave for your holiday. Your house can save you money if you unplug all those appliances that say in “ready mode” and suck electricity while you’re gone. Unplugging them saves the environment too. Lower the hot water heater temperature to “vacation”. Make sure the heater or the air-conditioner are at money saving settings. The house doesn’t need to be heated or cooled as much while you’re gone.

All these little budget travel tips could add up to more travel time… so make sure you take all of these budget travel tips into consideration.

How to Vacation on a Budget

Expedia.com

Been dreaming of a nice, relaxing vacation where you can get away from it all, but felt like it just wasn’t affordable? Fear not. Having a quality vacation without going broke can be done!

Create a Vacation Budget

First, take a good look at the household budget. Then decide how much it will be possible to budget for a vacation. Approach saving for a vacation as if budgeting for any other bill; view it as a necessity. If the temptation to spend the money on other things is a concern, set up a separate savings account specifically for the trip.

Make a conscious decision to set aside $ 50 to $ 100 or more each month. This can be achieved by eliminating unnecessary expenses like dining out frequently. When shopping, try using coupons, buying generic, and taking advantage of sales. Look into car-pooling or taking the bus to work. Go through old items lying around the house and have a yard sale. Put every dollar earned or saved toward the vacation goal.

Research Low Cost Fares and Lodging

While the vacation fund is building, decide on a destination. Will this vacation be done by driving, flying, or traveling by train or boat? Research travel prices, including off-season travel, promotions, and advanced ticket purchases. Traveling midweek and avoiding peak travel times can save a bundle. Save even more money by traveling with a friend and splitting the costs.

Decide ahead of time how much money to set aside for souvenirs, admissions to attractions, on-the-go dining, and lodging. Skip the expensive hotel and aim for a less expensive one. Most of the vacation will be filled with sightseeing and entertainment away from the hotel, so the room shouldn’t be a major factor.

Camping at state and national parks can save money as well. Most parks have electricity and water hookups right at the camp site. Freshening up after a long day of exploring the sights is just a short walk to the showers, and some parks even provide laundry rooms!

Make Every Penny Count Towards the Vacation

Getting around doesn’t have to be expensive if one takes advantage of public transportation. Take a cycling or walking tour and really experience the sights. While exploring, don’t forget to stop off at the local visitor’s center and pick up a few discount coupon books. The valuable coupons in these books can really save big money.

Stumped on ideas for inexpensive souvenirs? Check the local thrift stores and flea markets for discarded souvenirs. The people back home don’t have to know where their souvenir, just that it was picked up while on vacation. And don’t forget the camera. After the trip those photos can be turned into an iron-on for a T-shirt and then it will be a very unique keepsake.

While checking out the thrift stores, look for used luggage. People usually wind up with more stuff than they brought, and an extra bag is perfect for carrying all that loot home. With a little planning a successful vacation is possible and no one will go broke trying to make it happen. So go ahead, take that vacation and enjoy it.
